A while ago I wrote about how Nutanix was Shrinking the Datacenter with a box that packed a big punch, at least for demo, home lab (Community Edition), and similar non-production use cases. Now I’m pleased to report that Nutanix has created a new NX node suitable for enterprise use as small remote office / branch office (ROBO), and small datacenter and space constrained use cases. The NX1120S-G7 is a hot new platform, available for sale now, for all of the small use cases that were hard to cost justify previously. Below are some of the highlights of the new platform.
Here is a full datasheet for the NX1120S-G7.
Because the NX1120S is 1U and short depth it’s suitable for many different applications, including in small, tight spaces, such as aboard ships, subs, and in closets, or even drawers. This platform would work for the gas / petrol station shop front beside or under the cash register, in hotel properties, or any retail or ROBO use cases, and it only draws 180W of power. These nodes could be good for mining, even inside some of the big mining equipment to run their local IT needs where availability is critical and downtime is costly.
From the time the nodes arrive on site they could be set up and in use within a couple of hours. Nutanix award winning Prism user interface allows control of all major functions, and Prism Central can be used from a main location to control all ROBO sites across an enterprise. Combines with Nutanix award winning support for both hardware and software you have a single vendor solution for all your ROBO and small datacenter needs.
Even though the size of the node is small, with only a 10″ depth, it is incredibly powerful. These nodes really do pack a punch. We have successfully tested them under a full ERP workload with PeopleSoft with 5000 concurrent users. Although mission critical datacenter apps aren’t the primary use case, they do demonstrate how much power these nodes have.
Final Word
Up until now the complexity and cost of supporting thousands of remote sites and small datacenters has been high. Nutanix NX1120S-G7 solves this problem and delivers a platform suitable for space and power constrained use cases across many different industries, allowing high availability and efficiency where it may not have been economical to provide in the past. Over time the capability of these nodes will increase and we’ll be able to pack even more power in an ever smaller space. How can you utilize something like this for your business?
